WPI offers Advanced Diplomas in both Gestalt and Integrative Psychotherapy that lead to UKCP registration with the Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy College (HIPC). This is a relational and process led training.

The Assistant Tutor (AT) will be responsible for assisting the Tutor(s) in delivering a programme outlined in the WPI handbook. The specific role will be dependent upon the requirements of the organisation. For example, the AT for year 1, supports the Core Tutor with the new intake of first year students. The AT for year 2 & 3 groups, supports the delivery of either Gestalt or Integrative specific modules depending on their modality. The year AT for year 4, supports the Core Tutor to ensure HIPC Standards of Education & Training are complete as trainees near the end of their course. This is a relational, experiential and process-led training.
The year 2/3 programme includes Common Modules on Research in Psychotherapy, Trauma, Neuroscience and Shame as well as Gestalt and Integrative-specific modules. The curriculum is detailed in the WPI handbook.
Each module will be co-taught with another tutor or tutors. The AT will support the tutor(s) in working with the trainees in group process.
The AT will work with the tutor team to develop the programme to keep it current. Involvement in tutor meetings and recruitment is encouraged. Discussions will take place with the AT each year about their role, year group and responsibilities in the following year, on agreement that their contract will be renewed.
The AT will be a UKCP humanistic psychotherapist. They will be willing to undertake supervision training if they are not already doing so. Mentoring and support are available to develop the training acumen required. In keeping with our relational ethos, WPI will provide ongoing support and opportunities to discuss the role on a regular basis with a named member of the tutor team.
Should the AT feel that there are issues they are unable to resolve in conversation with their colleagues on the Tutor team, they are invited to contact a member of the advisory board or use the Raising Concerns and Dilemmas Pack to bring their concern to the attention of the Ethics Committee. https://www.welshpsychotherapy.org.uk/index.php/contact.
The tutors meet approximately every 3 weeks during term time to discuss student issues and to be responsive to student needs. This is usually an evening meeting. Once a term tutors meet in person for process & planning days for which payment is made. Each tutor/ assistant tutor teaching pair will have clinical supervision after each module funded by WPI.

Responsibilities of post
- Teaching as outlined above.
- Each day follows a programme which involves facilitating group process, facilitating theory and skills development.
- Close co-ordination with the other Tutor(s) in the reflective facilitation of the programme, following the agreed syllabus, whilst bringing own creative approach to the subject matter.
- Keeping abreast of developments in the field via CPD and contributing to changes in the syllabus in the light of this.
- Together with the Core Tutor, maintaining a focus on Intersectionality and Anti-Oppressive Practice in both the content and the process of the training.
- Participation in termly training meetings to review student progress and discuss issues concerning the content and general running of the Year programme within the context of the training as a whole.
- Assist at interviews and participate in the running of ‘Taster Days’ for potential students, as needed.
- Second marking essays during the year, together with reading and commenting on Student/Trainee journals or ‘Personal Development Profiles’.
- In agreement with Year Tutor(s), providing tutorials for students – minimum twice yearly. These are usually arranged within training days. Where students make appropriate requests for additional time outside of teaching modules, this can be arranged at additional cost to the student.
- Providing students with appropriate and considered pastoral support and feedback at tutorials and other times as necessary with the support of the core t
- Recognising when a Student/Trainee is experiencing emotional or academic difficulty with the training, addressing the issues with the Student / Trainee and referring any outstanding issues on to the Year Tutor or Programme Leader.
- Taking part in the end of year process to assess students’ readiness to go forward to further years of training.
- Develop teaching aids e.g. ensuring students have access to handouts and other teaching materials. Liaising with the Administrator as of need in this respect.
- Adding learning materials and articles to Training Materials
- Keeping records of student attendance, tutorials, assessment etc.
- Together with the Core Tutor, organising joint supervision for the teaching role, normally after each training module. This is funded by WPI.
- Maintaining UKCP Registration
- Taking responsibility for own tax, NI etc.
- This is not an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities. The post holder may be required to undertake other duties which fall within the ambit of the role, in discussion with the Training Co-ordinator.
Responsibilities of WPI

PERSONAL SPECIFICATIONS
The Assistant Tutor will need to have the skills and personal qualities outlined below.
Essential requirements
- UKCP Reg Psychotherapist in either Integrative or Gestalt modality but needing some familiarity with both.
- MA or Diploma in Integrative or Gestalt Psychotherapy.
- Experience of teaching.
- Some experience of working with interpersonal process.
- A willingness to learn process group facilitation skills especially awareness of working with a group of students who may have little previous experience of process or therapeutic groups.
- A well-grounded relational approach to both the content and the process of teaching.
- Some knowledge of Integrative & / or Gestalt Therapeutic Skills and a broad range of
theoretical approaches from Humanistic and Psychodynamic traditions.
- A currently practising psychotherapist.
- Willingness to facilitate experiential learning in a group.
- Demonstrable capacity to explore ethical and AOP issues issues with students.
- Competence with computer systems and admin.
Evidenced capacity to work within a team i.e. emotional openness, good communication skills.
Desirable Qualities
- Some experience of teaching in a psychotherapy or counselling organisation including assessing students, providing feedback and marking written work.
- Willingness to promote WPI activity
- An understanding that relational ethics and reflective practice is key to the role.
- Willingness to process carefully and responsibility the dynamics that can arise in the training groups, tutor groups or on occasion with the Board of Management.
- Willingness to model empowerment and anti-oppressive practice
This job description will be reviewed regularly in the light of changing requirements and any such changes will be discussed with the post holder.
- The process of induction is one of immersion in training, and through reflection with the Core Tutor, addressing any process issues that may arise. The process of induction and learning is supported by shared clinical supervision with the Core Tutor, and by other members of the tutor team through participation in Tutor Meetings and in Tutor Days.
- The WPI Raising Concerns Pack and the WPI Safeguarding Policy are fundamental to the safe delivery of the training. The post holder will be expected to familiarise themselves with these documents before taking up the post.
- While working with WPI, the post holder is expected to raise any safeguarding issues with their Core Tutor or the Designated Safeguarding Person.
- While working with WPI, the post holder is expected to raise any ethical dilemmas or issues of concern with either their Core Tutor or the Chair of Ethics and EDI.
